The Destruction of Pharaoh’s Host depicts the biblical destruction of Pharaoh’s army in the Red Sea, as recounted in the Book of Exodus.

Having pursued the Israelites through the parted waters, the Egyptian army faces its final reckoning. Enormous rolling waves consume Pharoah's army, their horses and chariots being destroyed as the sea crashes down upon them.

In the foreground, Moses raised his arms to invoke the wrath of God, while the Israelites look on as their pursuers are swallowed by the returning waters.

Through his dramatic use of light, immense scale and turbulent seas, John Martin captures a terrifying spectacle of divine intervention, transforming one of the Old Testament’s most extraordinary events into a monumental vision of destruction and deliverance.
