'The Devils' Checkmate' - Friedrich Moritz August Retzsch
The Devil’s Checkmate
Friedrich Moritz August Retzsch | 1831
Originally titled Die Schachspieler (The Chess Players), this masterpiece by German artist Friedrich Moritz August Retzsch depicts a young man engaged in a desperate game of chess against the Devil himself — with his immortal soul at stake.
The Devil sits pensively, eyes fixed on his opponent, while the man contemplates the board, looking for his next move. Between them, the chess pieces symbolise the eternal struggle between good and evil, with the white pieces carved into angelic figures, and the black pieces modelled into gruesome demons. Behind the table on which the chess board sits, stands a watchful angel, a silent presence of hope amid the struggle.
The painting has become closely associated with the legend of a chess master who, upon studying the seemingly hopeless position, declared that the young man still had one move left — a powerful reminder that even in the darkest moments, hope may not be lost.
Rich in symbolism and psychological tension, The Devil’s Checkmate presents a striking meditation on faith and the battle for the human soul.
