Saint Raymond of Fitero in the Defence of Calahorra
Saint Raymond of Fitero in the Defence of Calahorra
Attributed to Miguel Jacinto Meléndez | c. 1730
Mounted upon a powerful white horse, Saint Raymond of Fitero charges into battle, his sword raised above the chaos unfolding beneath him. Clad in the robes of a religious warrior, he appears as a commanding figure of faith and resolve. The dramatic composition captures the grandeur of Spanish Baroque painting, transforming a medieval monk into a heroic defender of Christendom.
Painted around 1730 and attributed to Miguel Jacinto Meléndez, this work celebrates the twelfth-century Cistercian abbot who founded the military Order of Calatrava. Established to defend the frontier fortress of Calatrava during the Christian reconquest of Spain, the order united monastic devotion with military service. The painting presents Raymond through the symbolic imagery of a warrior saint, commemorating his legacy in a powerful expression of religious conviction and martial courage.
