Saint Augustine

Philippe de Champaigne | c. 1645

Painted during the seventeenth-century Baroque period, Saint Augustine depicts one of Christianity’s most influential theologians and philosophers, renowned for his profound writings on faith, grace and the nature of God.

Dressed in magnificent golden episcopal robes, Saint Augustine gazes heavenward towards a radiant light bearing the Latin word VERITAS, meaning Truth. In his hand, he holds a flaming heart, symbolising his burning love for God and the spiritual transformation that defined his life.

Surrounded by books and scholarly instruments, Augustine is presented as both a devoted servant of God and a great intellectual figure of the early Church.

Through its rich colours, intricate detail and powerful religious symbolism, Philippe de Champaigne’s masterpiece captures the union of faith, reason and divine truth.
