God Speed - Edmund Blair Leighton

God Speed

Edmund Blair Leighton | 1900

A knight prepares to depart for war as his beloved ties a crimson sash around his arm, offering a final gesture of love and protection. Mounted upon his horse beneath the castle walls, he pauses for their farewell, his armour gleaming as the uncertainty of the journey ahead hangs over the scene.

Painted in 1900, God Speed embodies the ideals of medieval chivalry, loyalty and romantic devotion that fascinated Victorian audiences. Edmund Blair Leighton captures a deeply human moment amid the grandeur of a bygone age, where the promise of love stands against the dangers of war. The painting remains one of his most celebrated works, a timeless portrayal of courage, tenderness and the sorrow of parting.
