Flaming June - Frederic Leighton

Flaming June

Frederic Leighton | 1895

Painted in 1895, Flaming June is one of the most celebrated masterpieces of British Victorian art, renowned for its extraordinary use of colour, graceful composition and timeless beauty.

The painting depicts a young woman peacefully sleeping, enveloped in flowing orange drapery that glows with the warmth of the summer sun. Curled into a remarkably natural pose, her figure forms a harmonious circular composition, while the brilliant folds of her dress create a striking contrast against the tranquil Mediterranean seascape beyond.

A flowering oleander branch rests above her, introducing a subtle suggestion of mortality into an otherwise serene scene.

Completed during the final years of Frederic Leighton’s life, Flaming June represents the height of his artistic achievement, capturing an exquisite moment of warmth, tranquillity and classical beauty.
